Salisbury Cathedral: It was a great week of work and another week of vacationing in and around London. We managed to get out of the metropolis to visit a few outlaying locations such as Stonehenge, Bath, and Salisbury.

I'm headed to the UK in just under a week and having never been, I have found it necessary to read/listen to anything I have that is remotely linked to that little island.
I'm a great lover of the audiobook and I occasionally read words on printed paper as well. After making my way through a pile of books and hours of audio, I can heartily recommend the following, whether you're going to "visit the queen" or not:
London: The Biography by Peter Ackroyd
London: A Life in Maps by Peter Whitfield
Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson
A History of Britain, Volumes I, II, and III by Simon Schama
Oh, and "visit the queen" was not meant as a euphemism for anything.

Another great set of images from The Boston Globe.
Manhattan Beach: I've been back and forth to Los Angeles a couple of times over the last few days. I was able to take a little walk on the pier on my last trip before the meeting.

One of my favorite podcasts right now is The Monocle Weekly. They just recently moved into their Summer Series which features culture more than news. In the first episode, the featured musical act was The Quiet Nights Orchestra. I immediately fell in love with their music. It's still a little tough to get in the US, but if you scroll down on their MySpace page there is an option to purchase the MP3 files.
The Coudal Partners' Layer Tennis finals are today. The match seems to be one of those David versus Goliath tilts with the relatively unknown Gregory Hubacek going up against the defending co-champion, Shaun Inman. Hubacek came out of the qualifying matches and managed to beat Chris Glass in the first round of the playoffs and then took care of Aaron Draplin in the semi-finals.
Live commentary is being given by two of my favorites, John Gruber and Jason Santa Maria. It sounds like they might even be doing some live audio commentary.
The main Foundry75.com site is still being designed and coded. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am spending the majority of my time working on client projects. As a result, I have not had time to finish the site.
I've always planned to have a secondary site tied to the main site that would allow the posting of smaller stories, random photos and videos, and the occasional bit of detritus that comes along but isn't necessarily specifically related to my work.
After testing a number of ways to do this from rolling my own, tumblr, posterous, and eventually found my way to VIRB. It has all the features of the other services while adding a social component. In addition, it's a product of Media Temple who handles all of my hosting, and they do a great job. It was easy and quick to setup, which was a huge plus for all of the reasons noted above.
So, I'll be playing around here for a while. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to let me know.
In foundry terms, shakeout is the process of freeing the casting from the mold. The removal of the excess metal (called the sprue, runners and gates) is then done with hammers, cutting torches, or band saws. This site is for that excess material that doesn't belong with the finished product.
